People stand around a pavement painting of a deep, geometric architectural space at Herald Square.

Herald Square Celebration

Kurt Wenner (1958 –), an American artist

You should have the visual experience of giant people seeming to stand on top of buildings. However, although people are real, they are not giants and the buildings they seem to be…

A black-and-white photograph of a ventriloquist speaking beside his puppet.

Spatial Ventriloquism Illusion

The spatial ventriloquism illusion is extremely popular, as numerous ventriloquist shows attest. Below is a video taken from Paul Zerdin's Youtube channel. In 2015, Zerdin won America's Got Talent with his ventriloquist act.

When viewing the video, you should experience the voice as coming from the puppet, even though the source of the sound is actually the puppeteer.

Original comparison of rainbow-hologram viewing: two side-by-side views of a generic sphere show horizontal parallax, while vertically stacked views change from red to green to blue without adding a new vertical perspective.

Rainbow holography — Benton’s Sphere

Stephen A. Benton · Sphere, made at Polaroid

A hologram becomes visible in ordinary white light. Move sideways to explore depth; move vertically and its colour changes through the spectrum.

Original illustration of an infinity LED mirror with nested glowing rings and a side-view inset showing LEDs between a rear mirror and a partially reflective front panel.

Infinity LED mirror

Multiple-reflection principle; contemporary LED designs by many makers

A shallow frame seems to contain a deep tunnel of lights. A single row of LEDs becomes a chain of reflections that fades into the distance.

Bertrand’s 1865 engraving showing a Pepper’s Ghost stage, audience sight lines and the concealed illuminated figure beneath it.

Victorian ghost shows — Pepper at the Polytechnic

John Henry Pepper; optical arrangement developed with Henry Dircks

A ghost shares the stage with a living actor, then fades away. Victorian ghost shows turned hidden performers and sheets of glass into public spectacles of apparent presence.

Waterfall Illusion

Robert Addams popularised the illusion in 19th century; but it was known much before.

You should experience the dots in the test pattern as moving - even though they are stationary.

Original plan-view diagram of Pepper’s Ghost: a hidden figure is reflected in angled glass, appearing as a virtual figure on the visible stage.

Pepper’s Ghost

Henry Dircks and John Henry Pepper

A figure appears on an empty stage, transparent enough for the scenery to show through. Its real source is hidden elsewhere.
