Explore optical illusions, impossible objects and illusion art with pictures, viewing instructions and explanations. Follow the science and history behind each example, from classic visual puzzles to fractals and camouflage in nature and human design.

Impossible frame — A rectangular frame joins plausible corners into a contradictory whole.

Impossible frame

Nevit Dilmen

A rectangular frame joins plausible corners into a contradictory whole.

Score 0
A concave mask photographed or animated to demonstrate apparent convexity.

Hollow-face illusion

Longstanding demonstration; studied by Richard Gregory & others

A hollow face can look like a face turned toward you.

Score 0
Adjacent unequal parallelograms containing two highlighted diagonals of equal length.

Sander’s parallelogram

Friedrich Sander; earlier Matthew Luckiesh

Equal diagonals look unequal inside different frames.

Score 0
Oppel–Kundt Illusion — A subdivided distance can look longer than an empty one.

Oppel–Kundt Illusion

Johann Joseph Oppel and August Kundt

A subdivided distance can look longer than an empty one.

Overlapping black polygonal rings form the scintillating starburst pattern around a white centre.

Scintillating Starburst

This illusion was introduced to the academic literature in a publication by Karlovich & Wallisch in 2021. This illusion is also sometimes referred to as the "Sunray illusion" because it is reminiscent of sunlight breaking through the clouds. The illusion was originally created by Michael Karlovich in 2019 while designing a logo for his start-up company, Recursia Studios. Author credit: Karlovich, MW & Wallisch, P (2023).

Bright lines will appear to be coming from the centre. If you look at them directly, you will realise that they are not actually there.

A person stands beside a pavement painting that appears to open into a vast blue crevasse.

The Crevasse

Edgar Müller (1968 –), a German illusionist street painter

You should have the visual experience of a woman seeming to stand on top of a crevasse. However, although the woman is real, the crevasse is just a cleverly constructed 2D drawing on the…

Two equal center circles, one surrounded by larger circles and one by smaller circles.

Ebbinghaus circles

Traditionally Hermann Ebbinghaus; popularized by E. B. Titchener

The neighbors change the size of the circle you see.

Barnsley Fern — A few transformations generate a surprisingly plant-like form.

Barnsley Fern

Michael Barnsley

A few transformations generate a surprisingly plant-like form.

Score 0
Parallel long lines crossed by groups of short oblique hatch marks.

Zöllner illusion

Johann Karl Friedrich Zöllner

Short crossbars make parallel lines seem to diverge.

Score 0
Original two-panel diagram showing an object wave and reference wave meeting at a holographic plate, then a developed transmission hologram reconstructing a virtual object for a viewer on its opposite side.

Transmission holography — Optical Interactions

Gary Fisher · Optical Interactions

A flat glass plate reconstructs light from a still life. Move sideways and the objects reveal a different view, as though you were looking through a window.

Score 0
Checkerboard and cylinder casting a shadow, with squares A and B labeled.

Checker shadow

Edward H. Adelson

Two squares. One shade of gray. A shadow changes everything.

Eskimo-Face

Elizaabeth Douglass (formerly Winson) (1930-2014).
